Repercussions on the Mental Health of High School Students: A Case Study

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way of life in most countries, and Ecuador is no exception. A little over a year has passed, where mandatory biosecurity measures, social distancing, home confinement, and other targeted restrictions have been imposed based on traffic lights. However, some vital sectors for the country's progress have not been able to fully reactivate. The situation concerning education in the country is somewhat worrying since there are not enough guarantees to corroborate an adequate acquisition of knowledge by students. Nor has the state of mental health been considered, who could be presenting psychological problems, which are not appreciated by the naked eye. The balance in the emotions, guarantees the personal and social development of the person, as indicated by the World Health Organization. For this reason, the present case study is focused on showing and analyzing the mental health consequences which the students of the Third General Unified Baccalaureate of an educational unit in the city of Ambato, Ecuador, during their telematics instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been determined that most students analyzed presented unfavorable emotions such as sadness, anxiety, stress, disappointment, and fear. Thus, using a quantitative approach (survey) tool, the presence of alterations in their mental health was identified.
